Israel, Bolivia restore diplomatic ties after two-year of severance

(MENAFN) Israel and Bolivia have officially renewed diplomatic ties following a two-year suspension linked to the Gaza conflict, as stated by reports.

A joint declaration formalizing the restoration of relations was signed on Tuesday in Washington by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and his Bolivian counterpart Fernando Aramayo. Saar noted that ambassadors from both countries will be appointed in the near future.

The move follows Bolivia’s recent decision to lift visa requirements for US and Israeli citizens and comes shortly after center-right politician Rodrigo Paz assumed the Bolivian presidency in November, ending nearly twenty years of left-wing governance.

Bolivia originally severed diplomatic relations with Israel in 2009 in response to Israeli military operations in Gaza during 2008–2009. While ties were briefly restored in 2019, they were suspended again in 2023 amid allegations of war crimes in the Gaza Strip.

Several other Latin American nations, including Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Belize, and Nicaragua, have also cut diplomatic, economic, or military ties with Israel in protest of its military campaign in Gaza. Since October 2023, more than 70,000 people—mostly women and children—have been killed and over 171,000 injured in Gaza, leaving much of the territory devastated.
